Since he can't have a mask, how about some kind of "normal" breathing apparatus, like an asthma bomb or puffer; or those little portable oxigen medical tanks?

i thought about the tanks, kind an tribute to Blue Velvet, but I thought it made him look too feeble

Maybe he could wear an oxygen mask, when resting, but goes without when he is out working.

I thought about a kind of David Lynch "Blue Velvet" thing. But I wanted pure 1940 noir

Why'd he have to be a detective too? You could've just gone on ahead and made him a gangster. Although either way he'd still be working for the Emperor-boss. :D

"He told me enough you scumbag! He told me you killed him!"
